Who invented mac os x

System 1 was released on January 24, , along with the Macintosh K, the first in the Macintosh family of personal computers. This is because Apple ensures that Mac systems are optimized to work together, making MacBooks run more smoothly for the duration of their lifetime. Microsoft came first, founded in Albuquerque, New Mexico on April 4, Apple followed nearly exactly a year later on April 1, in Cupertino, California. There are a lot of Solaris fan-boys still out there, but they are dwindling.

A monolithic kernel is responsible for managing the CPU, memory, inter-process communication, device drivers, file system, and system server calls. He wanted to put FreeBSD on the desktop. And that's why he went to Apple. He was more than impressed. The most interesting thing about the new OS, he says, was that it provided polished developers tools that made it so easy for coders and software companies to build their own applications for the platform.

It was a far cry from the world of BSD and Linux. But at the same time, he felt right at home. He called a friend who worked at Apple and went to work for the company the next year. At first, he oversaw the company's BSD work and focused on modernizing the UNIX code for the desktop, but he eventually moved up the chain of command, handling security and energy efficiency efforts for Apple's operating systems, including iOS as well as Mac OS X.

The rub was that he couldn't continue work on FreeBSD. And although much of Hubbard's work for Apple was released as part of Darwin, much of it was kept behind Apple's closed doors. Then, earlier this year, he got the itch.

After 12 years on desktop and mobile, he wanted to get back to servers -- and FreeBSD. At WWDC '20, the company unveiled plans to transition all of its hardware to its own processors within two years — and said Big Sur will be the first version of macOS to run on the new chips.

As for Big Sur itself, it gets a UI redesign that includes curved windows, redesigned Dock icons, a new Control Center accessible from the menubar , a redesigned Notification Center, upgrades to make the Safari browser faster and more customizable, more "personality" for Messages, and an overhauled Time Machine backup system.

Apple stressed that Big Sur would use technology — dubbed "Rosetta 2" — that would make it possible to run apps designed for Intel chips on new hardware using Apple Silicon. Big Sur drops support for some older Macs mainly released before and will be available this Fall free of charge. Safari gets an overhaul that moves tabs high in the browser window, effectively combining tabs, the toolbar, and the search field, and allows users to create tab groups that can be shared.

Monterey also gets Shortcuts, which helps users automate tasks and is integrated throughout the OS. FaceTime gets a slew of new features, including Voice Isolation to make it easier to hear people on a video call and Wide Spectrum so callers can hear everything, not just a person's voice ; SharePlay, so multiple people in different locations can collaborate on work, or even watch the same movie and chat about it in real-time; blurred backgrounds; and a new grid view.

And with the rollout of Universal Control, users can work with a single mouse and keyboard and move between a Mac and and an iPad seamlessly, no setup required.

Monterey arrives in the Fall as a free upgrade. It drops support for older Macs made before late though it works on the Mac Pro. Here are the latest Insider stories. More Insider Sign Out. Sign In Register. Sign Out Sign In Register. Latest Insider. Check out the latest Insider stories here.

But just like in the last few years, Apple continues to bring the iPad closer to the Mac: the " Catalyst " framework makes it easier for iPad developers to bring their existing apps to macOS - and the " Sidecar " feature allows you to use your iPad as a second display for your Mac.

And it's indeed a big update, especially from a design perspective: sidebars are now full-height, the toolbars are taller, and selections come with rounded corners.

The Safari browser also received a lot of attention, with improved performance and a dedicated category for Safari extensions in the App Store.

On top of that, the Messages app is finally improved for groups - with inline replies and mentions. Monterey comes with a set of new features to help users connect with family, friends, and colleagues. With Spatial Audio added to FaceTime , participants' voices sound like they're coming from where they are positioned on the screen. Voice Isolation reduces background noise and Portrait Mode blurs out cluttered backgrounds. SharePlay now allows users to watch movies and TV shows, listen to music, and share their screen with other people in real-time using FaceTime.

Monterey is also focused on bringing tighter integration to the entire Apple ecosystem. With Universal Control , a single mouse, trackpad, and keyboard can be used across multiple Macs or iPads. A new "AirPlay to Mac" option gives the possibility of AirPlaying movies, games, and photos to the Mac, or using that device as a speaker. Try it 30 days for free! An Illustrated History of macOS.
