Nurturing a fragile idea from beginning to end means protecting the idea from meaningless metrics that will kill it too early. Many people like to see innovation programs as idea factories, but something we have seen work really well is to see successful innovation programs as being idea killers. Measuring how quickly your team kills bad ideas, and therefore with the least amount of investment possible, is a lean way to surface the good ideas fast.

This is where a strong operating framework for managing innovation will be your lifeline. Not only will it help weed out the bad ideas quickly, but it will also help determine the feasibility of your ideas. Your process has to constantly be forcing you to decide which ideas to keep, which ones to change, and which ones to put down for a little while or indefinitely. I nability to demonstrate success What is innovation success? The task of convincing the doubters with business case studies and deeply researched data to prove that inventiveness makes sense may require more effort than the innovators chose to invest.

Sales and finance staff may need intense education by the research and development group to understand that not innovating may pose more risk than supporting the concept. Employees may interpret the absence of assigned creativity-oriented tasks as extra work for some of them. Day-to-day business topics can occupy an agenda with a level of priority that excludes the creativity that a company may need to survive in the years ahead. No one wants to contribute a great idea and watch it die for lack of interest by the decision-makers.

And the idea can be seen and sold from the very first steps of the innovation process. Sell before producing, rather than going flat out to sell later on. To do this, define the minimum offer that meets the single primary need in your market, confront your project, adjust, pivot, and restart. Aborting a project sooner due to a lack of market needs is less expensive than seeing through a project technical and industrial development, etc.

An innovation project is a long and risky process. In the end, the market will be the judge. The challenge is thus to access the right actors and their feedback to make informed, reliable decisions on how to orient your project. But how do you do this?

Our take: The high satisfaction rate for innovation metrics combined with the very low scores for actionability of said metrics together with the very low satisfaction rate for innovation in general would point to many organizations using vanity metrics to measure innovation.
