They tend to also be known as flick knives, ejector knives, flick blades amongst other names. They are rapid, fast-deploying blades that are handy when time is of the essence.
Switchblades eject automatically by a spring when a button, lever, or switch is engaged. Dating back to the s, no doubt would you have seen these knives in action as their use was heavily popularized in movies and tv shows being the weapon of choice by street thugs, gangs, and criminals. This also transcended into reality with the same category of people using these weapons daily, although back in those days, looking back to years ago and farther back the laws were more relaxed.
There is also a flat plate that is the length of the blade. This plate sits right beside the blade. Two coiled springs on each end of the plate hold it in place. Double action blades will also have a slider connected to the handle.
This slider is what controls the metal plate. When the knife user slides it forward, this action pushes the metal plate forward. The metal plate then pushes the blade out of the handle and locks it into place. To retract the blade, users can pull the slider backward. This action will allow the springs to push the notch on the base of the blade backward, which pulls the blade into the handle. Now that we know how a switchblade works, it is time to learn how to use it.
There are a few basic tips that you should always keep in mind while using a switchblade. There are two basic kinds of switchblades; side opening and out the top switchblades. The blade will release out the side of the handle on side opening knives. If you have an out-the-top knife, the spring will push the blade straight out the top of the knife.
When using switchblades, make sure that you use your dominant hand, release the blade away from your body and make sure nobody is near you while using the knife.
Most importantly, check up on your local knife laws before purchasing or carrying a switchblade. In some parts of the world, it is illegal to carry and manufacture switchblades.

The blade has an extended notch at the base. The slider on the handle is connected to a rocker switch which is connected to the metal plate. When the slider is pressed forward, one of the springs is pushed slightly out of alignment. The other spring presses the metal plate forward, extending the blade and locking the notch into the base of the plate. When the slider is pulled back, the plate is popped free of the back of the blade, and the state of the two springs is reversed.
